Hostaria del Piccolo Restaurant Review

: Hostaria del Piccolo, a sister restaurant to Piccolo Ristorante in Venice, plays host to a happening scene that can get noisy. There are flat screen TVs on the walls, but you may be more entertained watching the pizzas go in the ovens in the long, open kitchen. Those with special dietary needs will find the menu easy to navigate, with special symbols noting what dishes are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, celiac friendly, dairy free and egg free. Starters include Italian cold cuts, fried calamari and baby back ribs with Tuscan beans and herbs. Of the more than two dozen variations of pies, the Pizza Nero is notable not only for its taste but for its striking appearance. The dough is infused with squid ink, providing a dark background against the toppings of mozzarella, ahi tuna and green onions. Squid ink also appears in the tagliolini pasta with shrimp, clams and vegetables. Rounding out the menu are daily changing fish preparations and roasted chicken stuffed with ricotta and spinach. There's even "pizza" for dessert, made with sweet toppings like hazelnut-chocolate cream and bananas or vanilla custard, strawberries and shredded coconut. The wine list is fairly limited, with mostly Italian selections. Also located at 512 Rose Ave., Venice, 310-392-8822.
