| This branch of the Il Fornaio chain is a sprawling trattoria with sleek good looks owing to a long bar, generous blond wood accents and a terrace overlooking the plaza of One Colorado, an Old Pasadena shopping-entertainment complex. A versatile place, Il Fornaio offers options from enjoying a steaming latte with a newspaper at the espresso bar to indulging in a full-blown meal. Based on our experience, however, we recommend sticking with the basics. Items like squash-stuffed ravioli in brown butter sauce, tagliatelle bolognese, and the margherita pizza are reliable bets. Rotating regional menus---each featuring a different region of Italy---sometimes provide enticing dishes (and wines) not widely available in L.A. Don't leave without picking up some fresh Italian breads or pastries to take home. Service can be rushed, sometimes appearing disorganized, especially on busy weekend nights. |
