| When you order guacamole at the venerable old La Parrilla, a cart is rolled to your table and the guacamole is prepared in front of you with great fanfare. First the avocado is cut and displayed like an Arnie Morton’s steak. Then you choose your level of heat. This show might seem like a gimmick were the guacamole not outstanding. La Parrilla’s queso fundido (cheese on fire) is also memorable, especially when you order it with spicy chorizo. For a real treat, spoon the cheese into the warm, pleasantly chewy house-made tortillas. As good as these starters are, they are only a prologue to the real specialty, flavorful grilled meats such as carne asada and tripe served on sizzling mortars or miniature barbecues. The mellow charro beans accented with chorizo, ham and grilled onions are heavenly. |
