Le Chene Restaurant Review: Le Chêne might be in the middle of nowhere, but it's one of the only real relais in Southern California. Much of the clientele may be decked out in cowboy hats and boots, but the menu, written on a blackboard, is unabashedly French and surprisingly extensive. Just name it---escargots, duck liver pâté, bouillabaisse, venison poivrade, veal forestière, rabbit in mustard sauce, roast quail Véronique---and you'll find it, from Escoffier classics to simple bistro dishes. We have enjoyed the onion soup and filet mignon au poivre, but many heavenly sounding items are likely to disappoint---but not when you consider the relatively remote location. Even more surprising is that Le Chêne surely offers one of the best wine lists you'd ever come across on the urban fringe. It boasts about 900 attractively priced selections from France and California, supported by more than 30,000 bottles in the cellar.
