Local Restaurant Review: Local is both a local hangout and a place dedicated to using local---and whenever possible, organic---ingredients. The majority of seating here is on the covered patio---the Sunset Boulevard traffic can occasionally be distracting---and the place is best known for breakfasts. Consider thick Belgian waffles smothered in apple-raspberry compote or whole-wheat banana-walnut pancakes straight from a cast iron skillet. Omelets are varied, and you can pair your eggs with pork belly, Niman Ranch bacon or vegan faux “bacon.” Lunch ranges from tofu chili to a quinoa burger with veggies and pine nuts, or a genuine pork Sloppy Joe with onion confit and oven-dried tomatoes. More sophisticated items and full table service arrive at the dinner hour, when the menu offers the likes of duck-mushroom ragoût over almond-currant polenta or Serrano ham-stuffed pork chops. There’s also an organic salad bar that is charged by the pound. |
