Loteria Grill, Hollywood, CA

Loteria Grill Restaurant Review

: The first of several spin-offs of the original Farmers Market location, Lotería Grill in Hollywood serves up fresh regional Mexican cuisine, but in a slightly more formal setting. Poster-size loteria cards decorate the red and white walls; there’s a bar on one end and a long counter. A covered patio opens out onto Hollywood Boulevard. The atmosphere is fun, with a few flat-screen televisions often showing soccer games. (Free Wi-Fi is also available.) "Purse trees" can be requested to hang your handbag by your table. Chef and owner Jimmy Shaw, who was born in Mexico City, has a passion for the country's native foods and flavors. He's particularly proud of Lotería Grill's chile rellenos. Keep an eye out for specials like cream of white corn soup or grilled beef medallion on a bed of huitlacoche and chile poblano sauce. Breakfast is served all day, though keep in mind the restaurant opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays. Diners can watch as their food is prepared in the open kitchen, just like at the original outpost, but here they can wash down their mole, tacos, enchiladas or ensaladas with offerings from a full bar. It features a large tequila selection with premium offerings like Tequila Ocho, plus mezcals and Latin American-inspired cocktails. The wine list is limited, but there's a good selection of Mexican beers, including the rare amber lager Indio, and Micheladas (beer mixed with lime juice, hot sauce and other ingredients). Among the desserts are interesting ice cream flavors such as sweet cheese.
