| At the entrance of this Florida Keys restaurant, take a moment to have a look at the wall of fame, featuring the first President George Bush, plus some superstar fishermen and Keys aristocracy. Then be whisked away by the hostess into a dining room that looks like a stage set of a Captain’s quarters --- or, much better, to the tropically-planted, umbrella-shaded outdoor dining area right on the beach. As the sun sets, gaze at the calm water and mangrove islands and share an order of tuna poke with avocado while examining the rest of the menu, and you'll feel like a native ending just another day in paradise. Chef Salvador Barrios’ menu has established itself for being just exotic enough to offer an adventure, but not too exotic to alienate anyone. It also whisks local ingredients and flavors into dishes like chipotle-glazed rib-eye with local mangrove honey. Best bets are fresh local seafood interpretations, like mahi served Martinique-style (with tomato concassé and grilled bananas). For dessert, the retro flamboyant Key lime baked Alaska is the favorite for a reason: it’s worth the indulgence. The wine list offers choices numbering in the thousands. |
