Modern Snack Bar has long been a home away from home for those looking for American comfort food dishes, like burgers, sandwiches and chicken potpie. Not surprisingly, the menu leans heavily on local seafood, with appetizers like baked clams and fried soft-shell crab and mains including lobster salad and fried flounder. But there are just as many choices not featuring fish, like the fried potato skin appetizer and North Fork Reuben sandwich. You’ll find more elaborate dishes at dinner, such as rotating weekly specials, perhaps shepherd’s pie and roast chicken. The dinner menu allows home-style meatloaf and prime rib to mingle, meaning that there’s something for everyone. The restaurant’s pies are famous on Long Island, especially the sky-high lemon meringue. Pies are also available for takeout, though they're best enjoyed while perched upon a stool at the old-fashioned diner counter or in one of the many booths. The beer and wine selection offers Long Island favorites as well as varieties from around the world.
