Robata Jinya Restaurant Review:
Part of a small chain of restaurants --- there are several in Japan and a few siblings in L.A. --- Robata Jinya contributes to a robust and multicultural dining scene on this stretch of 3rd Street. Robata (skewers grilled over an open flame) are the specialty, and some interesting items are available, such as chicken livers; garlicky beef; soft, charred avocado; or broccoli drizzled with anchovy dressing. Beautifully presented sashimi and carpaccio plates are offered, as well as meticulously crafted and plated sushi. Izakaya favorites like kaarage (fried chicken), croquettes and a fanciful shrimp toast are featured, as well as ramen. Desserts range from mochi ice cream to crème brûlée, and a perfectly serviceable list of sakés and wines is available. The woodsy décor features intricate carvings over the sushi bar; a pair of armored samurai warriors outfits the entrance.
