 In the middle of West Hollywood, Mexico Restaurante y Barra (currently in a period of transition) reproduces a Mexican ambience with outdoor patios; pink, orange, red and green walls, chairs and plates; strings of lights; piñatas; sombreros; flower-patterned oilcloth tablecloths; red umbrellas; and Mexican serapes to wrap around chilly diners. The authentic home-style cooking will please all, and at very reasonable prices. Start with a guacamole where the avocado has not been puréed but cut in small pieces, halibut ceviche, and handmade quesadillas. Odds are that after the grilled shrimp have been eaten, you will use your spoon to finish the accompanying chipotle dish. Order the grapefruit avocado salad: it is as good as it is simple. The mesquite wood-fired oven is the secret behind the nice tasting roasted duck seasoned with guava and habaneros, the roasted corn, the red snapper and the side dish of black beans. The coco flan needs more coconut flavor to be perfect. The bar is a welcoming spot for margaritas and cocktails.
