Monte Alban Restaurant Review:

Monte Alban is one of L.A.’s premier Oaxacan restaurants, showcasing the intriguing, often refined cuisine of one of Mexico’s richest culinary regions. There’s not a burrito in sight at this mini-mall eatery. For breakfast, there are hearty and well-seasoned dishes such as higaditos (shredded chicken with eggs and tomatoes). The mole negro offers a smooth, intense sauce made with more than 30 herbs, spices and chile seeds, served over tender white-meat chicken. You can also try red, yellow and green mole, but we prefer the black version. Other discoveries are empanadas with squash blossoms and cheese, chicken tamales with mint salsa, and pizza-like clayudas made with crisp tortillas. Cocktails include micheladas, margaritas and sangría; there’s also a good selection of Mexican beers.
