| With one of San Diego’s most pleasant patios, Mustangs & Burros is the perfect spot for drinks and gourmet bites on a sunny afternoon or under a blanket of stars. On some nights, the casual eatery is festive with its communal table, lively flamenco guitar music and margaritas or sangría. Other, quieter evenings, the brick patio, lit by lanterns, can be a romantic encounter spot for Champagne by the roaring fire, accompanied by acoustic guitar. The menu features several innovative small plates---featuring the flavors of Mexico with a California twist. Calamari reaches new gourmet heights in a chili-honey glaze, with its crunch of sweetness and a hint of heat. A plump shrimp, skewered by a scallion stalk, rests in a tomato chili chutney with cilantro aïoli. Delicate mahi mahi nestles on rock shrimp and corn risotto with a red pepper nage. Salbutes appear as polenta rounds covered with chorizo and chunky avocado corn salsa for a winning trifecta. Duck carnitas, mini tamales, and even a gourmet burger round out the menu. If you are feeling like a high roller, order the Millionaire Margarita with Maestro Nobel Diamond tequila, Grand Marnier 100 and fresh lime; it has a hefty price tag but it’s a smooth sipper under the stars. |
