POP Champagne & Dessert Bar Restaurant Review

: Ornate crystal chandeliers, Art Deco-style wallpaper and tufted booths give this Old Pasadena hideaway a seductive vibe that seems perfect for its Champagne- and dessert-heavy repertoire. Among small plates offered are jalapeño-spiked tuna tartare, crispy pork belly skewers and a creative trifecta of deviled eggs. A trio of Kobe beef sliders includes one with Gorgonzola mayo, pancetta and port reduction. Some dishes, however well-conceived, have some execution issues, but the truffled mac ‘n’ cheese with flash-fried oyster mushrooms is an indulgent delight. Caviar with classic accoutrements is also available for pairing with a glass of Veuve Clicquot, before moving on to chocolate-covered strawberries. Offered by the glass, bottle and flight are premium French vintage Champagnes and sparkling wines from around the world, and there’s also an eclectic list of non-bubblies. The dessert menu is as long as the list of savory dishes, including the likes of churros, crème brûlées, profiteroles and crêpes. Soufflés are taken seriously, with a monthly calendar devoted to variations ranging from chocolate-orange to red velvet. Despite its occasional miscues, POP is different and fun, which explains the packed house on weekends.
