Porkyland Restaurant Restaurant Review: We don't know how Porky the Pig would feel about Porkyland, which surely was named in his honor, but we like the place, as do many denizens of tony La Jolla---as well as other San Diegans who drive considerable distances to get their fill of this eatery's savory fare. This tiny place specializes in carnitas, the classic Mexican dish of pork cubes simmered gently and at length in bubbling lard, until they acquire a crusty exterior and an almost velvety texture. The rice, beans and tortillas all are quite convincing, as are such other specialties as tamales, carne asada and tacos al pastor, or rolled tortillas stuffed with a specially seasoned, slowly roasted meat mixture that shares some characteristics with Greek gyros. Go for the churros for dessert.
