In a neighborhood best known for inexpensive ethnic food and funky bars, this bistro is a delightful surprise and one of the University District's better options for brunch or lunch. The light-filled interior is spacious and pleasant, while the kitchen focuses on organic ingredients. If you're stopping for brunch, visit the breakfast bar to indulge in all-you-can-eat options. The bananas Foster french toast arrives with three slabs of challah crowned with sautéed bananas, plus rum and brown sugar syrup. Savory choices include the cafe's playful take on eggs Benedict featuring spicy black bean-pancetta cakes atop cornbread bathed in a house-smoked tomato and saffron sauce. At lunchtime, the menu boasts a seasonally changing list of fresh salads with a choice of toppings, such as seared ahi or Oregon country beef grilled steak. There are also assorted sandwiches ranging from a club, hot pastrami and portobello mushroom to a classic Reuben.
