| Silver Lake and the surrounding neighborhoods have plenty of great Thai dives, with authentic cuisine at bargain prices. But Rambutan Thai takes it to a whole other level with a serene, club-like setting complete with chill-out music, trendy cocktails and ultra-cool design. A Sputnik chandelier hangs near the bar at the back, while a golden Buddha head has been carved into one wall and another is covered with coral-colored raw silk. But don't assume that the stylish look means flavors and spices have been modified for non-Asians. The menu begins with nearly 20 "small bites," or Thai tapas meant for sharing. Beef waterfall---slices of charbroiled top sirloin in cabbage "cups"---features a bracingly spicy lime chili dressing, as does the catfish, a selection from the main courses. Salmon can be ordered cooked with ginger and mushrooms, or with a panang curry sauce for those who like it hot. Curries---also hot---can be had with chicken, beef, pork or shrimp, and vegetable stir-fries include the additional option of tofu. Safe for those who don't like scorchingly hot dishes is the Thai barbecue chicken---a half bird marinated overnight in garlic and cilantro, and served with a plum-chili sauce. The attractive bar at the rear of the room pours beer and wine, as well as cocktails made with soju, an Asian variation on vodka. |
