Dining room at Ristorante Morini, New York, NY

Ristorante Morini Restaurant Review

: Occupying the space of the former Centolire on Madison Avenue, the two-level Ristorante Morini satisfies a void in high-end Italian dining on the Upper East Side. The restaurant, cousin to the more casual Osteria Morini in SoHo, serves a refined menu in a duo of rooms: a small downstairs café and the upstairs, elegant main dining room. The $84 four-course prix-fixe dinner is suggested, although à la carte selections and a caviar menu are also available. Fans of Michael White’s other high-end restaurants (Marea, Costata, Ai Fiori) will want to start with his crudo --- request a trio (amberjack with sturgeon caviar, sliced Nantucket scallops, and big eye tuna with blood orange and fennel) if you can’t confine yourself to only one choice. An appetizer of olive oil-poached red shrimp sparkles in a briny zabaglione made from its own shell. Sampling White’s house-made pasta is de rigueur. We suggest the pillowy norcia, a dish of potato gnocchi, anchovy butter and black truffles. Lightly crusted duck breast set on a pool of huckleberry and lentils, or branzino grilled to a slightly salty turn with Ligurian olives are two standout main courses. Mascarpone cheesecake is a surprisingly light finale to the meal, plated with grapefruit granita, a swirl of elderflower gelée and crumble cubes. Not surprisingly, the international wine list skews heavily Italian with a large array available by the glass.
