Rive Gauche Cafe Restaurant Review

: One of the most enduring French cafés on Ventura Boulevard, Rive Gauche is a comfortable meeting place with the faint aura of a country auberge. Its bungalow dining room is charming, the brick patio is ideal for weekend brunches, and a separate bar across the courtyard is a fine place to enjoy a kir royale or Alsatian beer while sitting in front of the fireplace or watching a televised soccer game. During the day, the food is simple café-style French: quiches, pâté, crêpes and a variety of salads. At night, the cooking ranges from basic bistro dishes to more sophisticated items like traditional escargots, roasted duck à l'orange, poached salmon bathed in a light Dijon mustard sauce or chicken à la forestière topped with a molten hunk of Roquefort. A relatively unambitious yet highly affordable wine list complements the fare, which might conclude with a nicely caramelized tarte Tatin or a chocolate crème brûlée.
