Despite its proximity to a mall, Roy's in La Jolla's Golden Triangle is not a typical chain restaurant, but rather one of Hawaiian chef Roy Yamaguchi's fun yet sophisticated outposts. Inside all is abuzz, especially the popular full bar that boasts a notable wine list. Dinner service is a bit slow, but once you sink your teeth into the artfully arranged food, you will grant forgiveness. Besides a full sushi menu, there is also cooked seafood such as miso-glazed butterfish, opakapaka with red curry, and seared halibut in an Indonesian shallot sauce. The filet mignon was good, but lacked the intense flavor of the slow-braised beef short ribs. Although desserts range from the decadent flourless chocolate soufflé to the restrained tropical fruit cobbler, our pick is the mango-macadamia nut bread pudding.
