Scratch Bar & Kitchen Restaurant Review

: This reincarnation of chef Phillip Frankland Lee’s former Beverly Hills tasting bar concept sits on the second floor of Encino Place. Enter and find a bustling open kitchen surrounding a roaring wood fireplace, creating its own little world apart. Lee is charming and personable; he visibly enjoys visiting each table to recommend his favorite limited-production California wines (Thacher, Vino V, Juicy Villages) or local drafts from Poseidon Brewery. Scratch Bar & Kitchen has debuted a transformed dining room along with a progressive, 20-plus-course tasting menu experience ($145 per person). Expect dishes like wild mushroom meringue with truffled chanterelle mousse and absinthe-cured foie gras, and diced jellyfish with soy, ponzu, yuzu kosho and black truffle. Desserts by Margarita Kallas-Lee highlight a cheese course of Triple-Crème Camembert Iced Cream drizzled with smoked honey. There’s also a newly designed cocktail bar and an expanded wine list curated by sommelier Gavin Humes.
