 Chef-owner Hideo Yamashiro has a marvelous eye for ultra-fresh fish and the facility of a topnotch French saucier, and the results are sometimes masterful. He offers a handful of classically-inspired dishes, including starters like ravioli stuffed with shrimp and salmon mousse in a creamy shiitake mushroom sauce; foie gras with pineapple and port wine reduction; and fried oysters on the half-shell bathed in a curry sauce. Entrées include filet mignon with shallot sauce, Sonoma duck breast with juniper berry sauce, as well as some authentic Asian dishes such as his signature sizzling whole catfish with ponzu sauce and fresh cilantro. Chef Yamashiro's eye for detail is apparent in desserts such as an apple tart made with a first-rate puff pastry. The double-storefront space is spare and stylish---though chairs could be more comfortable---and this is one restaurant in South Pasadena that has a truly regional following. The wine list is moderately priced with some interesting boutique wineries represented.
