| There are trendier and pricier Thai restaurants on the eastern stretch of Ventura Boulevard, but this pleasant spot with a large repertoire and loyal clientele merits seeking out. Hot soups, good satays, and fiery beef salad (similar to a larb) are all worthwhile starters. An array of noodle dishes is generally first-rate. We recommend Northern-style kao soi with egg noodle soup, crispy noodles and crunchy onion, as well as a version of noodles topped with chopped green onions and mint to balance a serious level of spice. Sompun also produces curries like pud pirod, a fiery brew of coconut milk, mint leaves and green chilies, floating with strips of eggplant and bamboo shoots. Interesting seafood dishes, such as the o-lua (flattened shrimp with egg and bean sprouts) keep tables of locals happy, as does some of the friendliest service you'll encounter in the Valley.
