| Zankou Chicken introduced Armenian-style rotisserie chicken into mainstream L.A. culture, and Soumarelo gives that growing chain a run for its money. The bargain-priced, golden and crispy-skinned birds---a whole chicken costs just $8---come with pita bread, rice, garlic sauce (creamier and less potent than Zankou’s) and, unexpectedly, a sweet-and-hot Thai sauce that is hardly traditional but works surprisingly well with the tender, juicy chicken. In addition to standard hummus, you’ll find jalapeño- or red pepper-infused varieties, addictive muhammara (walnut paste with chilies and pomegranate juice) and creamy Russian potato salad. The pressed soujouk sausage sandwich is a pleasantly spicy and satisfying snack, and kebabs, falafel, even fish ‘n’ chips are offered at this clean, bright and friendly café. |
