This is one of the quirkiest but best sushi bars in the West San Gabriel Valley, if you don’t mind occasionally sub-standard service and a decidedly no-frills environment. But if you’re patient and can overlook the shortcomings, it’s possible to have an outstanding Japanese meal here. You’ll find some deftly crafted rolls, succulent scallop and sweet shrimp sushi, and fabulous crispy black cod in a delicate sauce---a dish not so terribly different from what you might find at Matsuhisa. Order off the specials board and you’re not likely to be disappointed. Be forewarned: the chef may want to take your photo before you depart, to mount on his wall of honor.
