Sweet Basil Restaurant Review: Thai restaurants may be a dime a dozen in Portland, but that doesn't mean they're interchangeable. Sweet Basil is more attractive than most, housed in a converted bungalow, tastefully decorated with warm colors and interesting artifacts. On nice days, there's a lovely patio under a grape arbor for outdoor dining. The menu, too, transcends the ordinary. Try some of the Bangkok-raised chef's less conventional offerings such as maing kum (bite-size wraps with roasted shredded coconut, ginger, shallots, lime, peanuts, fresh chiles and dried shrimp), the pumpkin tempura with plum sauce, or the crispy duck with broccoli and spinach. The Tangerine Bar on the first floor offers a full menu as well as lively cocktails, beer and wine. Spice levels are patron-controlled, ranging from mild, medium, wild or extremely wild. Portions are large.
