The L.A. edition of New York's eternally in Magnolia Bakery, The Sweet Life brings a winning combination of homespun cooking and urban flare to Third Street's mini restaurant row. A distinctly American venture, The Sweet Life seems enamored with the idea of something for everyone---from classics like French toast, chopped salads and mac 'n cheese to tofu chili, spicy shrimp curry and even sushi, which is offered only at dinner. We like the thick, overstuffed sandwiches and simple entrées like the grilled tuna, which is served with a colorful array of simple, fresh vegetables. Vegetarians and health nuts will feel right at home with an impressive selection of vegan and organic items, including Brigette's organic chai, some of the finest in Los Angeles. And for those not afraid to splurge, the French fries, thin and golden with a touch of spice, are well worth the indulgence. But the real treat at The Sweet Life is the confections. Best-sellers include the cupcakes, both vanilla and chocolate; little butter-cream frosted morsels like the stuff of childhood birthday parties. Other standouts include the decadent banana pudding, hummingbird cake and a double-layer red devil slathered with vanilla frosting.
