THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Tama Sushi Restaurant Review:
Personable sushi master Katsu Michite reopened his acclaimed restaurant after it burned down in 2002 and---for better luck---renamed it Tama, after his wife. Katsu is still one of the greatest artists ever to step behind a sushi bar in L.A., but unlike some of the city's marquee sushi bars (Matsuhisa, Mori, Sasabune), the prices at Tama are relatively reasonable. For $40, the chef will put together a truly memorable omakase (chef's choice) that might include a signature conch soup, dramatically served simmering in the shell atop a miniature hibachi. We were very impressed with the toro, kampachi and live scallop---all top quality ingredients executed with considerable finesse and served with the requisite aesthetic sensibilities. The blonde sushi bar sits in a pleasant, minimalist room with silver and grey tones and stone accents.
