Vignola Restaurant Review: The cuisine of the chef's favorite Italian town, Vignola, is prepared with local ingredients to create a menu that runs from rustic to elegant. The restaurant has a striking interior: wine-bottle chandeliers hang from the lofty ceiling and you can people-watch through the large windows. Open late, Vignola is also one of the best places in the city to get a drink and a snack with friends. After a night out, the pizza is just right. The crust is wafer-thin and crisp, a good complement to velvety cheese. A first-rate wine list --- and a beer list filled with locally crafted brews --- features selections not available elsewhere in Maine. Hand-rolled gnocchi with Gorgonzola cream is a dream and entrées are hearty, such as the simple grilled rosemary skirt steak with fingerling potatoes, grilled vegetables and a Tuscan steak sauce, or cassoulet of pork belly and duck confit with white beans and fruit mostarda. End with the napoleon layered with lavender mint cookies and white chocolate mousse or with a selection of cheeses --- the list offers more than 30 domestic and imported varieties.
