This elegantly sprawling bar and grill at L.A. Live is casual, comfortable and versatile enough for a fancy dinner or post-event drinks and a light bite. The airy modern room gleams with luminous violet tiles, giant windows bring in the bustling neon plaza scene, and classic rock kicks up the energy for both a youthful crowd and well-heeled baby boomers. The grander dishes---Kobe flat iron steak or garlicky mussels in a piquant saffron chorizo broth with fries---are good but standard Puck fare. Puck-luxe pizzas---prosciutto, goat cheese and baby artichokes for one---are great bar food, but could be crisper. It’s really the smaller dishes that steal the spotlight, such as the humble market salad of seasonal vegetables and greens, olives, feta and pine nuts composed and dressed so beautifully it almost brings salad to a new level. Al dente pappardelle with Sonoma rabbit ragù is savory and succulent. And while crab cakes west of Maryland almost always disappoint, this one is impressive, heightened with a California touch of pesto aïoli and micro arugula. For dessert, go with the seasonal crumble like peach and nectarine. Service is spot-on, and the superior wine list features a compelling array of Austrian (unsurprisingly given Puck’s roots) Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners.
