East-Coasters rejoice! Woodhouse Fish Company, a small, casual spot between the Mission and the Castro, serves up beloved New England “Maines” such as fried clam rolls, lobster rolls and beer-battered Icelandic cod fish ‘n’ chips. The lobster roll is about as authentic as you can get on the West Coast---lightly dressed with mayo, the lobster is fresh, sweet and tender, and the soft toasted roll is a good substitute for the traditional flat-sided hot dog bun found back East. Whole-belly Ipswich clams are hard to come by outside of New England, but Woodhouse flies them in fresh. Not a bit chewy (a sign they are properly cooked), they have the requisite mineral-y, salty flavor. You will find steamers here most days---soft-shelled clams steamed in their own juicy broth and dipped in melted butter. If you want to stay in California, try the giant artichoke piled on one side with shrimp and on the other with Dungeness crab, or the avocado stuffed with the same shrimp and crab. The restaurant's $1 oyster Tuesdays pack in guests. Also located at 1914 Fillmore St.
