W's China Bistro Restaurant Review: The elegant dining room at W's is stylishly modern but distinctively Chinese, also an apt description for the food. Fernando, Roberto and Marcelino Chong, brothers who emigrated from Peru in 1975 (and who also own nearby China Grill), incorporate South American and European ingredients with assurance and daring to create a fusion that never seems forced. Many of the items are inspired reinventions of traditional Chinese dishes. Begin with one of the intriguing "dim sum" options, either moo shu lobster or crab-stuffed "cigars" with macadamia nuts and Dijon-mango-lime dipping sauce. Highlights further down the menu include steamed salmon with lemon-soy sauce and shiitake mushrooms and Kobe-style steak with garlic noodles. The seventy bottle wine list is well-chosen and---most important---the servers know how to pair the selections with the cuisine. For dessert, skip the ubiquitous flourless chocolate cake and order banana and walnut spring rolls, served à la mode with brown sugar, cinnamon and the house five-spice caramel sauce. |
