Light-Bodied Barbecue and Picnic Companion
2 Lads Winery
2008 Cabernet Franc

Michigan

As far as American wineries go, 2 Lads is one of the more unique. First of all, the winery produces premium, boutique wines in the state of Michigan. 2 Lads—named for its principals, South African-born Cornel Olivier and Michigan native Chris Baldyga—focuses on sustainable farming and winemaking practices, including gravity fed transport of the juice. In addition to Cabernet Franc, they currently make Pinot Noir, Merlot, a red blend, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, a rosé of Cabernet Franc and three sparkling wines. The 2008 Cabernet Franc is nicely structured with tart, tangy acid. The nose is of cranberry, red currant and a woodsy note of crushed pine needles. In the mouth, the wine is relatively light-bodied with cranberry, raspberry and a hint of clove and lavender at the back of the palate. Try it with your favorite summer barbecue. The wine's acidity will cut through the richness of charred meat. Or take it along on an elegant picnic and serve with herbed chicken salad, ripe cherries and cold rosemary roasted potatoes. The wine's screw cap closure makes picnicking that much simpler.
