Eberle Winery 2009 Estate Muscat Canelli, our Wine of the Week review

Approachably Sweet
Eberle Winery
2009 Estate Muscat Canelli

California

Gary Eberle is an important figure in Paso Robles wine history. His career started in 1973 when he joined his family's pioneering winery, Estrella River (which is now Meridian). In 1980 he helped found the Paso Robles appellation, and created his own eponymous winery a few years later. Eberle focuses on Rhône varietals with a little bit of Italy in the mix. The winery currently produces both red and white Rhône blends as well as Viognier, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet, a Cab-Syrah blend, Sangiovese, Barbera and a Muscat Canelli. The 2009 Muscat has about 6.4% residual sugar, which makes it sweet but still approachable. Its aromas and flavors are predominantly stone fruits, particularly white peaches and apricots, but the wine's acidity comes across with a lemon curd note. Toward the back of the palate, the Muscat also offers a touch of wildflower and a hint of minerality on the finish. It would make a nice choice for a sophisticated picnic or a real surprise for a tailgate. Serve it with soft cheeses, Asian barbeque or even a slice of New York-style cheesecake. Fresh and light, the wine would also make a quenching aperitif on a hot summer day.
