Pfendler Vineyards 2009 Chardonnay - Wine Review

Sonoma Coast, California

Our Selection for Wine of the Week June 20, 2011

A bottle of Pfendler Vineyards 2009 Chardonnay, our wine of the week

Pfendler Vineyards
2009 Chardonnay

Sonoma Coast, CA

Pfendler is a family-run, premium winery situated in the Sonoma Mountains. Owner Kimberly Pfendler runs the winery in her husband's memory, with the help of her family and noted winemaker Greg Bjornstad. Because of their location in one of Sonoma County's coolest regions, Pfendler focuses on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as producing a rosé of Pinot. The 2009 Chardonnay offers bright aromas of citrus, honeysuckle and the spice of oak. The wine is nicely balanced with flavors that are a luscious fruit bowl of apples, Asian pears and tropical notes including pineapple, lychee and lime. It finishes with a sophisticated minerality and lingers pleasantly long on the palate. Although more restrained than a typical American Chardonnay, it should pair well with anything you would normally serve with your favorite Chardonnay as well as any food traditionally served with a fine Burgundy. Try it with poached lobster, linguine with pesto, simple, roast chicken or, for something more exotic, a cassolette of escargots. After dinner, the wine would continue nicely with a platter of aged goat's milk cheeses or white wine poached pears.
