This sleek 'n' small enclave of contemporary cuisine pioneered the transformation of Clinton Street from bodega central to restaurant row. Neither the surroundings nor the décor, which is casually hip but very simple, are proper preparation for the startling food which is innovative, understated and compellingly delicious all at once. Even though founding chef Wylie Dufresne left to open his own restaurant (wd-50) nearby, it's harder than ever to get a reservation. Executive chef Jason Neroni has brought his own touch to dishes like braised sweetbread-and-Louisiana crayfish gratin with pickled green mango and coconut milk; and crispy skate wing with sweet-and-sour rhubarb, Swiss chard two ways and crème fraîche. Also effortless is the attentive service. As you eat, you'll marvel at how wonderfully reasonable the prices are, but then again, good luck finding a cab to get home.
