A dark, rocking atmosphere combines with upscale yet recognizable Mexican cuisine in Long Beach, though the tequila list might be the real draw.

Agaves Restaurant Review

: While this trendy restaurant is a fun spot to enjoy upscale takes on classic Mexican-American dishes, perhaps the best part is the list of hard-to-find tequila and mezcal. One can also keep it simple with a cocktail like the “Agaves Rita,” spiked with lots of fresh lime juice. If you are in the mood to dig into the colorful and flavorful bites, however, there are plenty of good options. Start things off with an order of crispy chicken taquitos or the plump adobo shrimp with onion, bacon and red bell peppers. Tacos have a flair toward spicy, particularly the version with achiote-marinated steak. In terms of large plates, chicken breast is served in a complex mole poblano sauce with sesame seeds and plantains, and a large chile relleno is filled with cheese and a sauce of shrimp, baby scallops and white fish, rendering it more like a dip. Desserts like the vanilla sponge cake with sweet corn are particularly good, not often the case with Mexican restaurants. On Sunday afternoons, the restaurant serves a brunch menu featuring bottomless mimosas and specialty items like eggs smothered in smoked jalapeño salsa.
