Agaves Restaurant Review:

While this trendy restaurant is a fun spot to enjoy upscale takes on classic Mexican-American dishes, perhaps the best part is the array of hard-to-find tequilas and mezcals tucked amongst its list of over 250 selections. One can also keep it simple with a cocktail like the Agaves Rita, spiked with lots of fresh lime juice. If you are in the mood to dig into the colorful and flavorful bites, however, chef Veronica Lopez provides plenty of good options. Start things off with an order of crispy chicken taquitos or the plump adobo shrimp with onion, bacon and red bell peppers. Tacos have a flair toward spicy, particularly the version with achiote-marinated steak. In terms of large plates, chicken breast is served in a complex mole poblano sauce with sesame seeds and plantains, and a large chile relleno is filled with cheese and a sauce of shrimp, baby scallops and white fish, rendering it more like a dip. Desserts such as vanilla sponge cake with sweet corn are particularly good, not often the case with Mexican restaurants. On Sunday afternoons, the place has a brunch menu featuring bottomless mimosas and specialty items like eggs smothered in smoked jalapeño salsa.
