THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Apt-13 Restaurant Review:
Venturing out in the hinterlands of the East Village on Avenue C to this two-level bar and restaurant is worth the journey. If you’re a cocktail aficionado, it’s more like a pilgrimage. That’s because the man behind the bar is Leo DeGroff, son of legendary cocktail maker and shaker Dale DeGroff. Sip a Jackie Rose (applejack, pomegranate liqueur, lemon juice, grenadine) while perusing chef John Keller’s menu of deceptively simple-sounding comfort-esque dishes. Chicken & the Egg is comprised of a soft-boiled egg over a symphony of ingredients including chicken, bacon and broccolini --- the yoke splashes flavor throughout. Pig’s trotter croquettes are extra yielding (in a good way) on the inside, while a tender burger is helped by a thick slice of manchego. Save room for the creamy blueberry cheesecake. And don’t forget to have Leo shake up a nightcap for you.
