Barbone, New York, NY

Barbone Restaurant Review

: East Village Italian joints are a dime a dozen, but Barbone sets itself apart from its brethren with an impressive talent in the kitchen and a beautiful back garden. Inside, the vibe is rustic chic, with dark wood and brick walls in the narrow space leading to the aforementioned garden on a deck made from wooden planks. The standout appetizer is the lightly battered and crisp asparagus fries, which tend to disappear quickly when ordered with a group, as does the accompanying pancetta-spiked aïoli dipping sauce. Pastas run the gamut of classics, from spaghetti alla carbonara to more adventurous saffron fettuccine, while entrées are equal parts fish and meat --- the choice selection is the cast iron roasted duck breast. Five- and seven-course tasting menus represent a savory bargain.
