Birreria Restaurant Review

: Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich are partners in Eataly, Oscar Farinetti’s brainchild that bills itself as a small Italian village in the middle of Manhattan. Up on the roof is Birreria, a beer garden collaboration from Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head), Teo Musso (Birra Baladin) and Leonardo DiVincenzo (Birra del Borgo). Take the elevator to the fourteenth floor and ascend the steps to greet the city skyline. Wine and beer rest in hulking caskets that sit behind the perpetually-packed bar. Fire engine-red tables and chairs allow diners to sit in the open air and enjoy salumi and cheese with a carafe of wine or beer. Cheeses like the Parmigiano Reggiano and Asiago fresco pair well with the regional Italian wines and beers like Dogfish Head ale. The menu from executive chef Alex Pilas is mainly Italian, with Austrian and German influences reflecting the Alps regions. Share a combination of cheese and meats then dive into dishes like house-made sausages, apricot pork shoulder or local market fish served with celery, fennel, orange, capers and watercress. End with a classic Italian dessert like panna cotta.
