THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Caliu Restaurant Review:
Located in a narrow space that was previously occupied by an Italian restaurant, this 65-seat eatery has shifted the former tenant’s food focus and energy. The busy, frenetic restaurant is helmed by Peruvian-born Boqueria alum Franco Barrio, who cooks up straightforward but inspired Spanish tapas dishes. The Valdeon-cheese-stuffed bacon-wrapped dates are good but underwhelming. The golf ball-size croquettes filled with gooey sweet pumpkin, however, might require a second order. A small but flavor-packed hanger steak comes with sweet potatoes while the paella is loaded with house-made chorizo, chickpeas and prawns. The wine list, predictably, is all Spanish all the time.
