One might think chefs have hit the frontier of experimentation when a Chinese-Mexican-fusion restaurant swings its doors open in upper Manhattan. In fact, there’s actually a historical precedent for such a cuisine in the form of a legendary figure known as La China Poblana. But once you bite into this creative menu, history may be the last thing on your mind. Start with Oaxacan cheese-stuffed tempura zucchini blossoms, dribbled with vanilla sauce, or the hoisin-braised duck carnitas empanadas, which explode with flavor. For entrées, the signature pollo poblano, a crispy roasted chicken topped with curry, is worth every bite and the ancho chile and black bean scallops manage to successfully combine disparate-seeming ingredients while still preserving the buttery goodness of the scallops.
