THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Core One Nine One Restaurant Review:
Plushly upholstered dark leather chairs add a clubby note to this cozy cutting edge restaurant on the Lower East Side. Young chef Stephan Boissel, who previously worked under Paul Liebrandt at Gilt, brings globe-trotting flair to tapas-style shareable plates as well as a few entrées. Start with asparagus, accompanied by a medley of wild mushrooms and sautéed in a tangy vinaigrette or the grilled swordfish, which Boissel somewhat daringly (and successfully) pairs with corn and chorizo espuma. Then there’s spice-rubbed duck and its supporting cast of figs, Greek yogurt, and sesame-pine nut dressing. The menu’s tour de force is the tennis ball-size buttery sautéed sea scallop surrounded by a wading pool of savory sherry-hazelnut vinaigrette. Service is attentive and if they recommend a menu item, they’re almost always on the mark.
