Donostia Restaurant Review

: Named for what the Basque people call San Sebastian, Donostia sits on the northeast section of Tompkins Square Park in the East Village. The narrow restaurant offers an array of sherries and wines from the Basque country, including plenty of by-the-glass selections of Txakoli, a slightly effervescent dry white wine. The menu of pintxos is long and not for the indecisive. Montaditos, small open-face sandwiches, are a good place to start: the damasco con queso stacks cheese, apricot and anchovies; the chipirones, baby squid in its own ink paired with sherry and caramelized onion, is also a winner. There are ample amounts of salumi and cheese, including jamon Ibérico and 12-month aged manchego. If you’re craving something sweet, the main option is ice cream from local purveyor Il Laboratorio del Gelato.
