| A craving for some yabbies, mate? A taste for emu, eh? Just when you thought you'd tried everything, go try something different at Eight Mile Creek, an Aussie restaurant in fashionable NoLita. Yabbies turn out to be a type of crayfish, excellently cooked in a lemony risotto. The emu is served as a carpaccio, lightly slicked with truffle oil and dressed up with tender enoki mushrooms. Eight Mile Creek definitively displays Australia's cosmopolitan side with sophisticated vittles in a bistro ambience. The short menu does have dishes prepared from ingredients that a Yank will recognize like tender confit of duck and prawns, but servers are happy to describe the delights of the more regional items. The wine list leans heavily toward Australian bottles, with a mandatory nod to New Zealand. Don't expect a Fosters in this swank spot, and by all means leave the boomerang at home. |
