Upper East Side denizens keep this restaurant packed each night, flocking to the simple storefront for creative American cooking with a New York spin. Owners---father and son team Tom and Jonathan Rapp---call themselves cooks rather than chefs, but they come up with such innovative dishes that their modesty may seem misplaced after a dinner at the restaurant. While the menu changes regularly, we've enjoyed grilled quail salad with orange, walnuts and greens; and swordfish with charred eggplant. The fresh fruit cobblers and crisps are homey desserts. The mostly French wine list is well-chosen and moderately priced, the service friendly and efficient. Since this place is a real find, make reservations well in advance.
