 First & Hope Supper Club Restaurant Review: This is a high-concept restaurant that offers theatrical Art Deco surroundings, live jazz and cabaret, handcrafted cocktails and upscale American comfort food. Its theater district location makes it an ideal venue for dining before plays or concerts. Later on, a younger downtown crowd shifts energies to a hipper cocktail culture. The “praise the lard” is a trio of crispy pig ears, Kurobuta pork belly over creamy grits, and succulent bourbon-braised pork cheeks with a soft egg, while a seasonal “backyard” garden salad artfully arranges fiddlehead ferns, ramps, English peas, upland cress, morels and fresh favas in a baby colander with a side of green goddess dressing. For mains, "moonshine meatloaf" is made with foie gras and gin, wrapped in black bacon. More down-home is the southern-fried hen with potato salad and sweet collard greens. It’s all jazzed-up comfort food, often aesthetically presented, right down to a finale of Donuts & Shake---strawberry shake, vanilla ice cream-filled donuts and chocolate dipping sauce. The elegant bar, bathed in seductive lavender, offers a DIY Enomatic machine that lets guests explore and pour their own wines with a prepaid "debit" card, priced by the ounce.
