| Photos of famous New York figures dot the walls and red-checked tablecloths top the tables at this speakeasy-turned-steakhouse that has been in business since 1927. Most people come here for the steaks, which are excellent, grilled over hickory logs, but the roast prime rib of beef and lamb chops are safe bets, and you can't go wrong with the clams, oysters or oxtail soup. The grilled lobster is also good, and side dishes are greasy and buttery enough for steakhouse regulars. The cheesecake---which can be easily shared---lives up to expectations. The wine list is small and limited to mostly expensive Californian wines. |
