Havana Central Restaurant Review: Havana Central is destined to be a take-off on the notorious Sloppy Joe's, where gangsters, movie stars and politicos used to mingle while sipping rum and exotic mixed drinks. Hence the terra-cotta/dark wood color scheme, palm trees and ceiling fans---there's even a replica of a narrow, long table used to roll cigars that runs parallel to the expansive bar. Diners chow down on what's billed as real Cuban home-cooking which consists of juicy little empanadas (chicken or beef); pressed Cuban sandwiches of smoked ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard; or shrimp with mango-pineapple slaw---and those are just the starters. Mains include the famed dish called ropa vieja (stewed beef, onions and peppers); a create-your-own paella bar, which includes a vegetarian option alongside the more common combos like chicken, pork and chorizo; and crispy cod filets (like British fish, sans chips). Sides worth ordering are the fried sweet plantains, sweet potato fries, and (of course) rice and beans. If you've saved room for dessert, the very Atkins-unfriendly---but luscious---hot fried dough, dusted in cinnamon and sugar and served with either chocolate or dulce de leche dipping sauce, is a must.
