| An import from Orange County, Haven Gastropub in Old Pasadena has a cavernous interior that’s dominated by a huge horseshoe-shaped bar, and some massive fermenting tanks suggest this is one gastropub not content to merely dispense other people’s handcrafted beers. In the rear of the restaurant is a quieter dining area, near the open kitchen. Despite a lively bar scene, the main attraction is an innovative menu created by executive chef Greg Daniels, who applies Cal-French sensibilities to comfort food favorites like Buffalo wings, mac ‘n’ cheese (with black truffles) and French onion soup. Any self-respecting gastropub requires a good burger, and Haven’s is topped with St. Agur blue cheese and roasted peppers, served with pommes frites. Bacon-wrapped prawns are plated with cheddar grits, while pheasant potpie, a goose pastrami sandwich and porchetta di testa (hog’s head) reveal Daniels’ penchant for pushing quirky ingredients. Groups of eight to 14 may want to consider indulging in the special whole suckling pig dinner, which can be ordered through advanced reservation. Desserts have a sophisticated but whimsical touch as well, demonstrated by bacon ice cream and foie gras cheesecake. The wine list is filled with boutique California producers and interesting finds from around the world. And Haven offers 40 craft beers from across America and the globe. |
